Letters from Williams, a soldier in the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry and the 31st North Carolina Regiment from locations in North Carolina and Virginia to members of his family in Cumberland County, N.C. Williams wrote from the Virginia Peninsula, 1861; from Sampson, Onslow, Bertie, and other North Carolina counties, 1862-1863; and from Petersburg, Culpeper, and the banks of the Rappahannock in Virginia, May 1863-December 1864. The letters give a detailed picture of camp life and engagements in these locations.
